united. we gather in such a moment of heart break for all of us here in newtown. we gather especially mindful of family and friends and neighbors among us who have lost loved ones by an act of unfathomable violence and destruction. we gather to grieve together to care for one another, to pray and embrace, to weep and to remember and to declare in our many voices that these darkest days of our community shall not be the final world heard from us. we will sigh in our sorrows, but we will also care for one another with our love and our compassion. in those early hours of this crisis it became clear to we clergy and faith leaders here in newtown that initial, an initial community response would be needed, that we would need to come together and so, we asked our first select woman and our superintendent if it might be possible for us clergy to invite the community to gather here at newtown high school to continue and to begin and to continue what will be for many a long journey through grief and loss. we are not here to ignore our differences or to diminish the core beliefs which define ou

chris murphy, senator-elect and the current representative from newtown talking about the community and how it is responded, this quintessential new england small town as the president of the united states has said has been inspirational in terms of how they have dealt with this tragedy, from everything from the first responders arriving on the scene to the teachers and administrators and the way that they executed a plan that saved children's lives and those valiant who put themselves in the way of the assassin to save the lives of children. we are resolved in our caucus that the time to act is now and that we know taking no action is to be complicit to a future event. we announce today that we will have a task force that will serve to coordinate all of our efforts. we know that this is a comprehensive issue. we know that it is not just restrictions that need to be placed on guns but also the issues of mental illness, the culture of violence, and youth violence specifically. members of our caucus from carolyn mccarthy to grace napolitano to bobby scott and countless others who have

even one tiny iota of the courage those teachers, that principal in newtown summoned on friday, if cooperation and common-sense prevail, then i'm convinced we can make a sensible, intelligent way to make the united states of america a safer and stronger place for our children to learn and to grow. thank you, and now i'm going to let the vice president go and i'm going to take a few questions. and i will start with ben. >> thank you mr. president. i'd like to ask you about the other serious issue consuming this town right now the fiscal cliff. >> right. >> haven't you pre trade some of the voters who supported you in the election by changing your positions on who should get a tax increase and by including social security benefits now into this mix, and more broadly there seems to be a deepening sense that negotiations aren't going very well right now. can you give us a candid update, are we likely to go over the cliff? >> well, first of all, there is no reason why we should. remember what i said during the campaign, i thought that it was important for us to reduce our deficit in

. just earlier this year. this is hard still, right? talk about in the united states congress as a political analyst, how much have things changed, democrats in world districts and some republicans can be moved to do something more dramatic than what was defeated in newtown earlier this year in your very blue state? >> a key question. there were firing ranges used by the lanzas and gun stores in the vicinity. i think the point here is that there is a real opportunity for common ground. both sides have a common stake if the pendulum swings and there is an opportunity now to do something common sensible and reasonable and a 30 round magazine for a combat style weapon & bearing those bullets when which ripped them apart and up to 11 of them in some victims. that has noplace in our society. the president said a state of these shootings. there may be opposition, but whether it's the nra and we don't need to talk about specific organizations, but one of them is based in newtown itself. the organization that i work closely with in trying to establish common ground back in the 1990s a

in newtown which i am very respectful of. i think today is one of sadness and i hope to honor the memory of those victims by what we do in the united states congress because they, as much as anyone in this country, their families and loved ones and friends are calling for action. >> can you maim any g.o.p. members besides scott brown who have come forward to support any kind of gun control? >> not at this time. but i haven't had the opportunity to talk with any of them yet. >> you mentioned president clinton called you. i'm wondering if you can elaborate more on what he said and what if anything you've asked him to do in this process? >> he was talking about the battle back in 1993 with the bill that interestingingly enough was introduced and passed in 1993 and went into effect in 1994. of course he was president and the white house came alive and was very, very helpful in enabling the passage soft that bill bath in the senate and in the house. and so to have him part of the team again is really quite special for us. >> [inaudible] >> there is not unanimous consent agreement. i talked wi
